California hay production was valued at $1.782 billion in 2012 and was ranked as the state's 7th most valuable commodity. Not only is hay a significant component of the California economy in and of itself, it is vital to the California dairy industry, valued at a whopping $7 billion in annual retail sales in 2012. California dairies produce 21% of the country's milk and in 2012 produced a total of 42 billion pounds of milk.
